Paranormal investigators AKA demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence. This real case exposes the existence of demon. This case is even more sinister than they have previously done. In this case the Warrens investigate a murder that may be linked to a demonic possession. It starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they’d ever seen before, to mark the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their roles as paranormal investigators and authors Ed and Lorraine Warren, with Ruairi O’Connor, Sarah Catherine Hook, and Julian Hilliard also starring. Wan and Peter Safran return to produce the film, which is based on the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, a murder trial that took place in 1981 Connecticut, in addition to The Devil in Connecticut, a book about the trial written by Gerald Brittle.

Trial of Arne

The Trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, also known as the “Devil Made Me Do It” case, is the first known court case in the United States in which the defense sought to prove innocence based upon the defendant’s claim of demonic possession and denial of personal responsibility for the crime. On November 24, 1981, in Brookfield, Connecticut, Arne Cheyenne Johnson was convicted of first-degree manslaughter for the killing of his landlord, Alan Bono.

The story starts with an exorcism on 8 years of David Glatzel, as he is possessed, in Brookfield, Connecticut. During the ritual the evil spirit transfers from David to Arne just because Arne summoned it in his body. Only Ed knows about the transfer. At the end of exorcism Ed gets heart attack and is taken to a hospital, so, he is unable to tell anything to anyone about the transfer.

Later, in Hospital he wakes up and informs every detail to Lorrain, he further says to Lorrain that Arne is in danger and she has to save him. Lorrain, immediately calls to the local police station to check Arne. Here, in landlord home, Arne, feeling uncomfortable, kills the landlord Alan Bono, by stabbing him 22 times under the control of demonic possession. The Warrens make the administration agreed and this case becomes the first American murder trial to claim demonic possession as a defense. Which leads them to investigate David’s possession. Father Gordon tells them about a priest, Kastner, who also suffered the similar situation before. The Warrens also come to know about a satanic curse called Totem. Kastner tells them that an occultist had intentionally left the totem, resulting in the creation of a curse on the Glatzels, causing the possession of David.

Hearing the similar case of Katie, who was stabbed 22 times, Ed and Lorrain go to Danvers, Massachusetts. They find look alike Totem in Katie’s friend Jessica’s, who is missing, home. They start searching Jessica with the help of a local detective in nearby forest, where Katie was killed by stabbing 22 times. Having the power of seeing things beyond Lorrain imitate exactly what happened at the time of Katie’s murder. They come to know that Jessica killed Katie under the influence of demonic possession, and jumped into a near by lake. The local administration finds Jessica’s body and preserve it in a morgue. The Warrens go to the morgue where Lorrain touch Jessica’s body and feels a very powerful evil spirit. Lorrain tries to find the location of that evil spirit and comes to know that the evil spirit once was an occultist. She tells everything to Ed and also says that the connection works both ways.

The Warrens return to Connecticut meanwhile Ed loses his consciousness and tries to attack Lorrain but Drew, their assistance, saves her in time. They found a Totem in their house, it was hidden in a flower vase. Drew tells Ed that the alter, used by the occultist, must be destroyed to the curse to be lifted. Lorrain goes to father Kastner for help, and find that father Kastner raised his daughter named Isla. He tells Lorrain about the devotion of his daughter, Isla, to occult. This devotion dragged her to become an occultist. Kastner gives the access to tunnel to Lorrain, where the alter was built by the occultist, who then kills Kastner. Here, Ed comes to know that the occultist was the daughter of father Kastner, so, he rushes to search Lorrain. He finds his way into the tunnels through a locked drain hole. In the tunnels the occultist holds the the control over Ed, and tries to kill Lorrain. Lorrain reminds him their first meeting and good moments happened in their life, that bring Ed conscience back and destroys the alter, saving himself, Lorrain and, Arne. Then, the curse has been lifted.

During the trial, Arne is convicted of manslaughter but ends up serving only five years of his sentence, after marrying Debbie while in prison.

Goofs

  1. When Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) has a heart attack, Loraine (Vera Farmiga) instructs someone to call 911. Considering they were in Brookville, Conn, it is unlikely 911 services were available to such a rural area at that time. Chicago suburbs finally got access to 911 in 1981 (the same year the movie took place). Moreover, at that time not even 50 percent of the U.S.A. had access to 911 services and those areas were only urban and suburban.
  2. When Ed & Lorraine Warren meet Arne’s lawyer for the first time, the book Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke (published 2004) can be seen behind them in a row of books. Black & gold foil hardcover without its slipcase.
  3. The Gene Kelly version of The Three Musketeers is shown to have been playing in the movie theater that Ed worked at on the day that he met Lorraine. This movie came out in 1948, while in real life Ed and Lorraine got married in 1945.
